Mariya Medetova

Soprano

Mariya Medetova is a young soprano from Kazakhstan, winner of the Grand Prix of the National Competition for French-language singing, organized each year by the Alliance Française in collaboration with the French Embassy in Kazakhstan, and winner (2nd place) of the International Festival of Classical Vocal Art, named after R. Zhubaturova. She was a semi-finalist in the Les Symphonies d'Automne competition in Mâcon in 2022 and was preselected for the Neue Stimmen competition in Frankfurt am Main in 2021. In March 2019, she was invited to be a judge at the final of the “National Competition for French-Language Singing” held in Almaty.Mariya Medetova is currently pursuing her master's degree at the Haute École de Musique de Genève.In 2021, she played one of the leading roles in Morozov's children's opera The Golden Key and the role of Aksinya in Shostakovich's opera Katerina Izmailova. In 2023, she played the role of Belinda in Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas, and this year she took part in the Tenor Viñas competition.

Kazakh Soprano with unique timbre

Mariya brings a unique cultural depth to her artistry, seamlessly blending diverse musical traditions.Born and raised in Kazakhstan, Mariya Medetova grew up in a unique cultural blend of Eastern traditions and Western influences. This fusion of cultures shapes her musical identity, allowing her to bring a distinctive sound and interpretation to her performances and infusing her music with a unique depth and perspective.Her operatic repertoire includes roles such as Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, performed at La Collégiale, and Aksinya in Shostakovich’s Katerina Izmailova at the Almaty State Opera. In addition to opera, Mariya has a deep passion for performing art song. Together with her duo partner Johan Girardin, she has performed at the Les Estivales festival, Théâtre du Passage, and most recently at the Festival d’été de la Collégiale Neuchâtel. Their repertoire consists of works of composers such as Franz Schubert, Henri Duparc, Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy, Gustav Mahler, and Alban Berg.In addition to her musical development, she had the privilege of participating in master classes with esteemed artists, including singers Regina Werner-Dietrich, Mariella Devia, Christoph Strehl, Peter Edelmann, Christine Schweitzer, Soile Isokoski, Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet, Eleonora Pacetti, as well as conductor Leonardo García Alarcón. These invaluable experiences have enriched her musical journey and provided a unique insight into the intricacies of vocal technique and artistic interpretation

Education

Mariya Medetova is a soprano currently pursuing a Master’s in Specialized Music Performance (Soloist) at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) under the guidance of the renowned soprano Diana Damrau. With a strong vocal foundation, she also holds a Master’s degree from the Haute École de Musique de Genève and a Bachelor’s degree from the Kazakh National Conservatory.

Awards

Mariya has demonstrated her talents on international stages, advancing to the semifinals of prestigious competitions such as the Otto Edelmann Competition (2024), the Les Symphonies d’Automne Festival in Mâcon (2022), and the International Student LiedDuo Competition (2024), where she and her pianist partner, Johan Girardin, were awarded the Student Award at the Aurora Festival.She clinched the Grand Prix at the National competition for Francophone songs (2018), annual event organized by the Alliance Française in collaboration with the French Embassy in Kazakhstan. Additionally, Mariya earned the 2nd place prize at the International Festival named after R. Zhubaturova (2018).
